Crossing Borders, Breaking Boundaries

A project supported by the European Union’s PEACE IV Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

The Crossing Borders, Breaking Boundaries project (2017 – 2020) tackles sectarianism, discrimination, racism and the exploitation of EU and non-EU migrants in precarious and insecure sectors of the labour market, along the border region of Ireland and Northern Ireland.

This cross-border partnership uses innovative outreach and engagement methods to ensure the participation and leadership of black and minority ethnic migrant workers in the agriculture, food processing and services sectors in Donegal/Derry, Cavan/Armagh, and Monaghan/Newry-Down.

Together, we will develop a new model of labour market integration and work across communities, employers and statutory bodies to ensure safe, appropriate and meaningful access to and participation in employment in the border region.

Across the lifetime of the project, we will:

  • Provide vital casework and advocacy support to black and minority ethnic workers
  • Facilitate workers to participate and take action through leadership training and capacity building, creating a new model of labour market integration
  • Support the organisation of workers to lead dynamic campaigns to raise awareness and change policies
  • Conduct in-depth research with workers to find out more about working conditions, the impact of cross-border dynamics/Brexit, and issues impeding labour market integration of black and minority ethnic migrants
